Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Søn, set of six 'Sawbuck' CH29 chairs, oak, teak, Denmark, 1952. This set of six chairs is designed by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen. This chair holds a very strong construction even though it has a simplistic design. The chair only consists of eight parts. The chairs are defined by the V-shaped gaps in the backrest. The chair has a slightly slanted position, making the chair more comfortable than it looks. A number of chairs by Wegner are called sawbuck chairs, or 'bukkestole' in Danish. These chairs, which are closely related to folding chairs, but yet fixed in an open position. The chair is defined by the A-shaped frame that can be seen from the side. The name derives from the shape that sawbucks or sawhorses in his workshop. The sawbuck shape was something that many cabinetmakers were very interested in. The design is very strong and simple and only demands a few part and little material.
